Known as a staunch advocate of the equal rights of women to receive an education, Bathsua Reginald Makin developed a reputation as a learned woman and maintained correspondence with intellectual men and women throughout Europe. At the age of 16, Bathsua published her first book of poetry, Musa Virginea.
