The Battle of the Bogside was a large three-day riot that took place from 12 to 14 August 1969 in Derry, Northern Ireland. Thousands of Catholic / Irish nationalist residents of the Bogside district, organised under the Derry Citizens' Defence Association , clashed with the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) and loyalists .

The ‘Battle of the Bogside’ is a name given to violence and rioting that erupted in Derry in August 1969. Many historians consider it the first significant confrontations of the Troubles. The fighting in Bogside erupted at a time when tensions were running high.
BATTLE OF THE BOGSIDE. On 12 August, thousands of Apprentice Boys prepared to march through a Derry seething with anxiety and discontent. As the march passed the Bogside, it was greeted by jeering and stone throwing. The police, backed by loyalists, tried to force the protesters back.

…that became known as the Battle of Bogside (after the Catholic area in which the confrontation occurred) stemmed from the escalating clash between nationalists and the RUC, which was acting as a buffer between loyalist marchers and Catholic residents of the area.
