Abstract. Background: Intraoperative blood salvage (IBS) is a technique that is frequently used in major blood loss surgery. Classically, it is avoided during cancer surgery where a fear exists of entraining cancer cells into the shed blood. In this study, all reports of this practice were collected to determine if this fear is warranted.
This machine separates the different parts of your blood and collects just the red cells (which carry oxygen). These red cells can then be given back to you during or just after your operation. Your red cells will only ever be given to you and will never be used for someone else. This type of cell salvage is only suitable for some operations.

Blood salvage is generally safe and associated with a very low incidence of adverse events . The technique can be used during surgery to retrieve intraoperative blood loss.
11 de may. de 2022 · Allogeneic blood transfusions in oncologic surgery are associated with increased recurrence and mortality. Adverse effects on outcome could be reduced or avoided by using intraoperative autologous blood cell salvage (IOCS). However, there are concerns regarding the safety of the autologous IOCS blood.
Blood salvage is performed during surgical procedures when the risk of significant blood loss is expected. The recovered blood is collected, processed, and readministered to the patient, decreasing or preventing the need for allogeneic (from a donor) blood product administration. If the blood is not given to the patient, it will be discarded.
Blood Salvage Efficiency. The large variance in IBS efficiency has already been acknowledged. That efficiency is in part a function of the nature of the procedure, which influences the amount of debris and/or the necessity to introduce foreign materials including irrigation, cement, and procoagulant substances that must bypass the IBS device.
