  4. Total enrollment is approximately 1,500. Maine’s oldest college, Bowdoin was chartered in 1794, and instruction began in 1802. The school was named for James Bowdoin, a statesman and first president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and received much of its initial endowment from his son. Women were admitted in 1971.
