8 de may. de 2017 · The Bread or Blood riots reveal that climatic shocks could still provoke famine and rioting in the nineteenth century, even in the country that should have been least vulnerable to them. They also show that contemporary media depicted the rioters with disdain, in ways that probably worsened official responses to them.
21 de sept. de 2017 · The attacks occurred in broad daylight, and they were all carried out in the space of one month, between the middle of March and the middle of April 1863. It was truly a Confederate spring of soldiers’ wives’ discontent. On April 2, in the biggest street action of all, women in Richmond notoriously shouted “Bread or Blood.”.
11 de abr. de 2024 · The worst disturbance was at Littleport in May 1816 when a large crowd was dispersed by the yeomanry, with two killed. In the event, five were hanged and nine transported. The protesters were said to have carried placards threatening ‘Bread or blood’.
