The Hohenzollern Castle lies on an 855 meters high mountain called Hohenzollern. It still belongs to the family today. The dynasty was first mentioned in 1061. According to the medieval chronicler Berthold of Reichenau, Burkhard I, Count of Zollern ( de Zolorin) was born before 1025 and died in 1061.

Volgens de kroniek van monnik Berthold van Reichenau werd Burchard in 1061 samen met Wenceslaus van Zollern vermoord tijdens een vete. Wie deze Wenceslaus was en wat de familieband was tussen Burchard en Wenceslaus is onbekend en wordt in deze kroniek niet vermeld. Ook de reden en de omstandigheden van deze vete worden niet vermeld.
