From the bases of London and Colchester the legions and their auxiliaries continued the conquest.

In AD 49, it was granted the status of a Roman Colonia, a planned settlement for retired veteran soldiers who were granted Roman citizenship. This prestigious title meant that Colchester enjoyed all the privileges and benefits of Roman citizenship.
