In 17th-century France, Baron Philippe de Sigognac lives a modest life in his crumbling castle, the last scion of a noble lineage fallen into disrepair. One winter day, while out riding, he encounters a group of traveling actors whose wagon has broken down.
This tale from a Théophile Gautier novel fits the theme, as a seventeenth-century nobleman (Fernand Gravey) joins a theatrical troupe out of love for an actress (star of Fascist-era Italian cinema Assia Noris), where he finds the community he never could in his castle.
