Carl Djerassi was born in 1923 in Vienna, Austria, and received his education at Kenyon College (A.B. summa cum laude, 1942) and the University of Wisconsin (Ph.D., 1945). After four years as research chemist with CIBA Pharmaceutical Co. in Summit , New Jersey , he joined Syntex , S.A. , in Mexico City in 1949 as associate director of chemical research.
