Carlton House Terrace. Carlton House was a palatial mansion that stood on the north side of the Mall. It was rebuilt from an existing house for Henry Boyle, 1st Baron Carleton (1669–1725), shortly after 1700. Frederick, Prince of Wales, bought the house in 1732 and it was granted to his grandson, George, later Prince Regent, in 1783.
Carlton house was demolished and the present Carlton House Terrace (actually two terraces) was later built, designed by John Nash. Between them is the Duke of York's Column (reviewed separately). They are in beautiful stucco-clad classical style with columns, friezes and pediments and the rear overlooks The Mall and St James's Park.
The house in Carlton House Terrace next but one eastward from the Duke of York's Column was the residence of Mr. Gladstone for some years before and during his premiership, in 1868–74. Curiously enough, it was occupied for a time, some thirty years earlier, by another Prime Minister, the late Earl of Derby, then Lord Stanley.
