As the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Appropriations and a three-year Joint Budget Conferee, Migden was responsible for overseeing the allocation of California's (then) $100 billion budget. In May 2007, she announced that she had been diagonsed with leukemia in 1997 and was given 3-5 years to live.
