Catherine war die einzige Tochter des englischen Staatsmanns und Dramatikers Sir Charles Sedley, 5. Baronet (1639–1701) und seiner ersten Frau Lady Catherine Savage (1640–1680). Catherine kam als Hofdame an den englischen Hof und wurde um 1673 die Mätresse des Duke of York und späteren Königs Jakob II. von England (1633–1701).

25 de feb. de 2023 · Catherine Sedley, Countess of Dorchester (1657-1717) was the mistress of King James II of England. Known for her wit, she was not considered a beauty. Catherine had a troubled childhood, and her mother was admitted to a psychiatric hospital when she was young. She began her affair with James while working for his wife, Mary of Modena.
Catherine Sedley, död 1717, var en engelsk hovfunktionär. Hon är känd som mätress åt Jakob II av England. Hon utnämndes till hovfröken åt Maria av Modena 1677 och blev sedan mätress åt Jakob II. Paret fick inga barn. När Jakob II besteg tronen 1685 fick hon en pension och utnämndes till grevinna av Dorchester.
This convinced the Gallery to re-identify the oil portrait as that of Catharine Sedley, Countess of Dorchester (1657–1717), mistress to King James II. This is one of over a hundred portraits in the Gallery’s collection whose sitter identification has been queried, debated and then dropped.
