On 16 March 1706, the widowed countess married, as his third wife, John Sheffield, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby; the wedding took place at St Martin-in-the-Fields. The duke, a great supporter of King James, was more than thirty years older than his new duchess, and they had three children, two of whom died in infancy:
11 de sept. de 2023 · The last effigy known to have been carried at an Abbey funeral is that of Catherine, Duchess of Buckingham who died in 1743. Her son Robert Sheffield, Marquess of Normanby is the only effigy of a child in the collection. Her other son, Edmund, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, has the only recumbent effigy and this is in its original case.
By James II, Lady Dorchester had a daughter, Lady Catherine Darnley (died 1743), who married James Annesley, 3rd Earl of Anglesey, and after his death married John Sheffield, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby. Through Catherine Darnley she was the ancestress of the Barons Mulgrave and of the Mitford sisters.
