Claude inherited his father's title of Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne in 1904, whereupon Cecilia became Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. The Strathmore estates included two grand houses and their surroundings: Glamis Castle and St Paul's Walden Bury. Cecilia was a gregarious and accomplished hostess who played the piano exceptionally well.
Mary Cecilia Bowes-Lyon was born on 30 January 1932 at Gastlings, the Bowes-Lyon family home in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Her father, Michael Bowes-Lyon (1893–1953), was the fifth son of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and Cecilia Bowes-Lyon, Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne (née Cavendish-Bentinck).
Cecilia Bowes-Lyon fick cancer, men hon överlevde efter att hon genomgick en hysterektomi 1921. [ 1] I april 1938 gifte sig hennes barnbarn Anne Bowes-Lyon med Thomas, Viscount Anson. Under bröllopet fick grevinnan av Strathmore och Kinghorne en hjärtinfarkt, och hon avled 8 veckor senare. Hon begravdes 27 juni 1938 vid Glamis Castle.
