Charles Beauclerk was created Baron Heddington and earl of Burford in 1676 and duke of St. Albans in 1684.

In 1684, King Charles II admitted that Charles Beauclerk, then 14-year-old 1st Earl of Burford (Charles Beauclerk), was his illegitimate son with actor Nell Gwyn, and conferred him the title of Duke.
