Life. Charles was born in Strelitz, the only son of the reigning Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Adolphus Frederick II, and his third wife, Princess Christiane Emilie of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. His father died when he was only three months old. His half-brother succeeded Charles's father as Adolphus Frederick III, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
Charles Michael, Duke of Mecklenburg (German: Carl Michael Herzog zu Mecklenburg; 17 June [O.S. 5 June] 1863 – 6 December 1934) was an officer in the Imperial Russian Army, heir presumptive to the throne of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and from 1918 head of the Grand Ducal House.
On 1860 his elder brother Frederick William succeeded their father as Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. George August died on 20 June 1876 in St. Petersburg, at the age of 52. The line of his son George soon died out; since his first son had married morganatically, his second son Charles Michael became titular grand duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
