The Duchess - otherwise known as Ann Fortune Fitzroy - served the royal household as Mistress of the Robes for Her Majesty’s entire reign to date.
Lady Charlotte Waldegrave (1761 - 1808), was daughter of James Waldegrave, 2nd Earl Waldegrave, and his wife Maria Walpole. In 1784 she married George FitzRoy, 4th Duke of Grafton .

She worked as the Queen’s Mistress of the Robes and was one of Her Majesty’s closest friends for nearly 70 years. The Duchess had a close relationship with the Queen, and even made the monarch the godmother to her second daughter in 1954.
The Duke of Grafton and, of course, his mother, the Duchess of Cleveland, are the ancestors of many prominent members of the modern British aristocracy. Diana, Princess of Wales, was descended through the House of Stuart via Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton (as well as his half-brother, Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond and Lennox).
