Lee was created Earl of Lichfield in 1674 at the age of ten, a result of his betrothal to the daughter of King Charles II. The Lady Charlotte Fitzroy was the fourth of six children born to the king's mistress, the Duchess of Cleveland. Sweet-natured and strikingly beautiful, Charlotte was adored by her father the king.

Charlotte Lee, Countess of Lichfield (5 September 1664–17 February 1718), formerly Lady Charlotte FitzRoy, was the daughter of Barbara Palmer, Countess of Castlemaine (née Barbara Villiers, later 1st Duchess of Cleveland) and King Charles II of England and Scotland. Lady Charlotte was married to Sir Edward Lee at the age of 9.
