Charlotte Small (September 1, 1785 - May 4, 1857) was a Métis woman who notably joined her surveyor, map maker, and explorer husband David Thompson on his expeditions.

Charlotte Thompson née Small. (1785-1857) Charlotte was born in what is now Canadian Northestw in 1785. Charlotte was the Métis daughter of fur trader Patrick Small and a Cree wife. Her father left the business and abandoned his fur trade family when Charlotte was just five.
Charlotte Small Thompson (1785-1857) was a representative of the many Indigenous women who formed significant partnerships with fur traders during the 18th and 19th centuries.
When he eventually married 14-year-old Charlotte Small, daughter of a Northwest Company Fur trader and a Cree mother, they soon began their grand adventure that today is considered one of Canada’s great love stories.

As a woman of Cree and European descent, Charlotte was Metis, and part of a culture that would help shape Canadian history from the 19 th century onwards.
May 4th, 1857 is the 150th anniversary of the death of Charlotte Small, wife of David Thompson. Charlotte was born on September 1, 1785 at the North West Company post of île-à -la-Crosse on the Churchill River in what is now Saskatchewan. Her mother was a northern Woods Cree and her father was Scottish fur-trader Patrick Small.
