Maximilian Joseph inherited Charles Thedore's title of Elector of Bavaria, while William was compensated with the title of Duke in Bavaria.

It was built around the end of the 11th century or the beginning of the 12th century and was under Wittelsbach ownership for many years. Today, part of the castle is used as a youth hostel.
