It is known chiefly for Chiswick House, near its centre, and for 18th- and 19th-century buildings at Chiswick village, hereafter referred to as Old Chiswick, and Strand-on-the-Green, respectively at the eastern and western ends of the loop.

There was meadow for 5 ploughs, pasture for the cattle of the vill, and woodland for 150 pigs, but the villeins had only 2 ploughs and the value had fallen from £10 T.R.E. to £8.

Townshend was born in Chiswick, West London, at the Chiswick Hospital, Netheravon Road, in the UK.He came from a musical family: his father, Cliff Townshend, was a professional alto saxophonist in the Royal Air Force's dance band the Squadronaires and his mother, Betty (née Dennis), was a singer with the Sidney Torch and Les Douglass Orchestras.
