He was often labelled the “French Hitchcock” but, with his rigorously intellectual approach to pulp material, it’s more instructive to see his work as the connecting line between the great English auteur and directors like Brian De Palma and David Fincher.

Bereits früh war er vom Film fasziniert, studierte jedoch, nach dem Krieg nach Paris zurückgekehrt, zunächst Literaturwissenschaften an der Sorbonne, danach für kurze Zeit auch Jura und Pharmazie.
