1485 wurde Coburg nach der Leipziger Teilung Land der Ernestiner. Da die sächsischen Kurfürsten die Reformation unterstützten, konnte diese schon bis 1524 durch den Pfarrer Balthasar Düring in Coburg eingeführt werden. 1528 fand die letzte katholische Messe in der Siechenkapelle statt.
