The Officers of Arms. For most of the time since their incorporation in 1484 heralds have been members of the Royal Household, directly appointed by the Sovereign on the recommendation of the Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal. Since the re-incorporation in 1555 the College has consisted of thirteen officers of arms.
The College of Arms is the official heraldic authority for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and much of the Commonwealth including Australia and New Zealand. As well as being responsible for the granting of new coats of arms, the College maintains registers of arms, pedigrees, genealogies, Royal Licences, changes of name, and flags.
November 2023 Newsletter (no. 73) Record Manuscripts of the Tudor Visitations: The College of Arms has published an important new volume, which provides a detailed catalogue and index to this key series of official record manuscripts, created by the heralds in the sixteenth century and preserved at the College ever since.
The College has a number of highly skilled heraldic artists who can be commissioned through an officer of arms. Clients include Government Departments and agencies in Britain and overseas; local authorities, institutions, universities and schools, commercial companies, as well as private individuals all over the world.
As of 1 January 2024 the fees payable upon a personal grant of arms and crest are £8,950, a similar grant to an impersonal but non-profit making body, £18,415, and to a commercial company, £27,450. The College of Arms in London claims to be the heraldic Authority for Australia (a claim disputed by the AHS). The Kings of Arms of England will grant arms to any Australian citizen and, possibly, to any Australian resident. The Lord Lyon King of Arms of Scotland will grant arms to any Australian of Scots descent or close connection.
