The aging Alva Vanderbilt bought a neighbouring chateau to be near her daughter. The 9 th Duke died in 1934 and Consuelo was once again welcome at Blenheim Palace as a guest of her son the 10 th Duke. Consuelo Vanderbilt, born in New York in 1877, was the first child of William Kissam Vanderbilt (grandson of the Commodore, Cornelius Vanderbilt) and his first wife, Alva Erskine Smith.
