The marriage of Contessina de' Bardi to Cosimo de' Medici around 1415 was a key factor in establishing the House of Medici in power in Florence. Cosimo rewarded the Bardi family for their support, restoring their political rights upon his ascent in 1434. In 1444, he exempted them from paying particular taxes.
Contessina nacque nel 1390 [1] da Alessandro di Sozzo de' Bardi, conte di Vernio, e da Emilia (o Camilla), figlia di Raniero di Galdo Pannocchieschi, conte d'Elci. From the Bardi di Vernio born Contessina de 'Bardi, wife of Cosimo de' Medici and grandmother of Lorenzo the Magnificent. In 1487 they bought a building in via de 'Benci and in 1576, thanks to a donation of Francesco I de' Medici, they returned to the palace in via de 'Bardi, after it was confiscated by Pietro Capponi for his support of the Pucci conspiracy against Cosimo I de 'Medici.

Like Giovanni"s marriage to Piccarda, this marriage brought noble connections to the common family of the Medici. Together the couple had two children: Piero "il Gottoso" and Giovanni.
