His elder brother, Sancho II, was deposed by order of the pope, who granted Afonso the crown. He returned to Portugal and was welcomed by the towns and the church.

After the Battle of Crécy, it withstood an English siege for almost a year (1346) until it was starved out. Six burghers of the town offered themselves as hostages to the English in exchange for lifting the siege.
