    The College of Air Warfare moved to Cranwell in 1972 when RAF Manby closed down which included the Staff Nav Course and the Aero Systems Course for Navigators. I attended the Staff Nav Course in 1973; I completed it mid tour on 51 Sqn at Wyton. I was destined to become the NImrod R staff officer at 1 Gp in 1977.

  5. It is thus the RAF equivalent of Sandhurst or the Britannia Royal Naval College, and is considered by some to be the spiritual home of the RAF. No.3 Flying Training School (FTS), training navigators and non-commissioned aircrew, is also based here. Cranwell is also home to two of the RAF bands namely the RAF College Band and the RAF Regiment Band.

  6. The unit left the airfield in June 1943. The airfield was also used for testing new types of aircraft. This included a short flight of a jet-powered Gloster aircraft by test pilot Lieutenant Gerry Sayer in 1941. Today, the airfield is still used by the RAF and is home to the officers’ training college.
