He won the Groves Memorial Prize in 1934 and, after graduating, he joined 13 (Army Co-operation) Squadron at Netheravon on 28th July 1934. His first posting was to 74 Squadron at Horchurch in January 1937. He joined 79 Squadron on 22nd March 1937. He was promoted to Acting Flight Lieutenant on 7th March 1939 and appointed 'A' Flight Commander.
