It is thus the RAF equivalent of Sandhurst or the Britannia Royal Naval College, and is considered by some to be the spiritual home of the RAF. No.3 Flying Training School (FTS), training navigators and non-commissioned aircrew, is also based here. The north airfield situated behind the impressive RAF College Hall is grass-surfaced and used for gliding and can best be seen from the ‘Lighter-Than-Air Road’ which leads north from the B1429. The road name commemorates the early use of the site as a RNAS airship training station, selected in 1914 because of its flatness, lack of dykes and proximity to coastal bombing and gunnery ranges.

In 1995, following the Defence Cost Studies, a number of major changes to the College’s organization and structure commenced: the Joint Elementary Flying Training School moved from Topcliffe to Cranwell’s satellite airfield at Barkston Heath, and the Basic Flying Training School moved from Cranwell to Linton-on-Ouse.
