This year sees the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and in commemorative events across the county, Dorset will be paying homage to the incredible bravery of allied troops who left South Coast ports and airfields for France on 6th June 1944.

Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, US 101st Airborne Division made its first combat jump into Normandy on 6th June 1944 from Douglas C-47s based there. Upottery opened in February 1944 and was originally designed as a bomber airfield for the USAAF.

Hace 4 días · The 82nd Airborne landed at Ste. Mare-Eglise on D-Day. The infamous event that occurred at Ste. Mare-Eglise on D-Day was the landing of John Steele on the church tower. He was forced to play dead for hours while the fighting unfolded beneath him. A dummy has been placed on the tower in remembrance of this unfortunate event.
