His assist and putout totals during the early 1920s are some of the highest of all time, and he was the first shortstop to turn 100 double plays in a season.

He returned to Superior the next year and played in a league-leading 127 games, improving his average to .267, stealing 38 bases, and earning a reputation as a defensive star. Dave remained there after the season to marry Edna Harriet Gisin.
