Ian Liddell-Grainger was born on 23 February 1959 in Edinburgh to David Liddell-Grainger and Anne (née Abel Smith), whose mother was Lady May Abel Smith, great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. [2] The Liddell-Grainger family were landed gentry, of Ayton Castle, Scottish Borders, formerly of Middleton Hall, Middleton, Northumberland.

Ayton Castle was the residence of David Liddell-Grainger (1930-2007), a Scottish politician, husband of Anne Abel Smith, a descendant of Queen Victoria, and father of Ian Liddell-Grainger, a Conservative MP (b. 1959). The family sold the castle in 2015.
David Ian Liddell-Grainger, KStJ, DL, FSA Scot (26 January 1930 – 12 March 2007), a former Scottish politician, was the son of Henry Liddell-Grainger and Lady Muriel Felicia Vere Bertie, daughter of Montague Bertie, 12th Earl of Lindsey. He was educated at St Peter's College, Adelaide, and Eton College.
