Even though he was working in the advertising world for J. Walter Thompson (still a major player today in marketing and communications), Hicks had an abiding passion for art and design.

He was married on January 13, 1960 at Romsey Abbey in Hampshire, to Lady Pamela Mountbatten (born 19 April 1929), the younger daughter of the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, and his wife, the former Edwina Ashley.
