David Soslan was a member of the royal house which ruled Alania (Ovseti or Oseti in the Georgian sources; hence, the modern designation of Ossetia ), an Orthodox Christian kingdom in the North Caucasus , and frequently intermarried with the Bagrationi dynasty of Georgia.
