Although Dervorguilla was the lord of Galloway's third daughter, and the second of his marriage to Margaret, the fact that Margaret was herself an eldest daughter was adjudged to give Dervorguilla's son, John, the stronger right to the vacant throne of Scotland over the claims of Robert (V) de Brus, son of Margaret's younger sister, Isabel.
Dervorguilla is well-known for her foundation of Sweetheart Abbey (1273) near Dumfries, and for the completion of the foundation of Balliol College (1282), begun by her husband in the 1260s. She died on 28 January 1290 at Barnard Castle in County Durham and was buried at Sweetheart with the heart of her husband.
