Dorothea Stewart of Avondale (c. 1543 - 1607) was a daughter of Henry Stewart, 1st Lord of Methven and Janet Stewart, Countess Dowager of Sutherland. She was the first wife of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie. Following the execution of Ruthven for treason in 1584, Lady Dorothea was obliged to surrender Dirleton Castle to James VI.
His widow, Dorothea Stewart came to the opening of Parliament on 22 August 1584 and kneeled on the Royal Mile crying to the king for grace for her children. James Stewart, Earl of Arran pushed her away, and she fainted and was left on the street. [12]
When Dorothea Stewart was born in 1549, in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland, her father, Henry Stewart 1st Lord Methven, was 54 and her mother, Janet Stewart, was 44. She married William Ruthven 1st Earl of Gowrie on 17 August 1561, in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland.
