  3. Dorothea Stewart of Avondale (c. 1543 - 1607) was a daughter of Henry Stewart, 1st Lord of Methven and Janet Stewart, Countess Dowager of Sutherland. She was the first wife of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie. Following the execution of Ruthven for treason in 1584, Lady Dorothea was obliged to surrender Dirleton Castle to James VI.
