Dorothea Stewart of Avondale (c. 1543 - 1607) was a daughter of Henry Stewart, 1st Lord of Methven and Janet Stewart, Countess Dowager of Sutherland. She was the first wife of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie. Following the execution of Ruthven for treason in 1584, Lady Dorothea was obliged to surrender Dirleton Castle to James VI.
When Dorothea Stewart - Countess of Gowrie was born in 1551, in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland, her father, Henry Stewart 1st Lord Methven, was 56 and her mother, Janet Stewart, was 46. She married Sir William Ruthven of Ruthven - 1st Earl of Gowrie on 17 August 1561, in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland.
