The Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg ( German: Herzogtum Braunschweig und Lüneburg ), or more properly the Duchy of Brunswick and Lüneburg, was a historical duchy that existed from the late Middle Ages to the Late Modern era within the Holy Roman Empire, until the year of its dissolution. The duchy was located in what is now northwestern Germany.
Christian was born on 9 November 1566, the second son of Duke William of Brunswick-Lüneburg and Dorothea of Denmark, was elected in 1597 as Coadjutor of the Prince-Bishopric of Minden and took office as the bishop himself in 1599. Ernest was born on 31 December 1564 as the second of fifteen children and the eldest son of William the Younger and his consort Dorothea of Denmark. After studying at Wittenberg, Leipzig and Straßburg he returned to Celle as a result of his father's worsening health. In 1592, after the death of his father, he took over the reins of power.
Augustus was born in 1564 as the fifth of fifteen children and the son of William the Younger and his wife Dorothea of Denmark. As a young man he was a colonel in the service of Rudolf II and fought in the campaigns against France and Turkey. In 1610 Augustus became the Lutheran administrator of the Prince-Bishopric of Ratzeburg.
Dorothea of Lorraine or Dorothée de Lorraine, was by birth a member of the House of Lorraine and by marriage to Eric II, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenburg.
Life. Dorothea was the daughter of Prince Rudolf of Anhalt-Zerbst (1576–1621) from his first marriage to Dorothea Hedwig (1587–1609), daughter of the Duke Henry Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel . On 26 October 1623 she married in Zerbst with Duke August the Younger of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1579–1666). This was August's second marriage.
George was born on 28 May 1660 in the city of Hanover in the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg in the Holy Roman Empire. He was the eldest son of Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and his wife, Sophia of the Palatinate. Sophia was the granddaughter of King James I of England, through her mother, Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia.
