When Richard Cromwell was born on 4 October 1626, in Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire, England, his father, Oliver Cromwell Lord Protector of England, was 27 and his mother, Elizabeth Bourchier, was 28. He married Dorothy Maijor on 1 May 1649, in Hursley, Hampshire, England. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 10 daughters.

In 1649, Cromwell married Dorothy Maijor, daughter of Richard Maijor, a member of the Hampshire gentry. He and his wife then moved to Maijor's estate at Hursley in Hampshire. During the 1650s they had nine children, five of whom survived to adulthood.
