Duchess Marie’s child is believed to have been born in November 1897 in Paris and christened Paul Andree, going on to be initially cared for by a French couple before Duchess Marie’s cousin from the Russian branch of the family, Duchess Helene, arranged for a Russian family to adopt him at the turn of the century who in turn renamed him.
The second member of the family born in Britain after the Hereditary Prince Friedrich Wilhelm in 1845 was Duchess Helene the daughter of Duke Georg and Duchess Irina and a niece of the two Countesses of Carlow. She was born in St Leonard’s-on-Sea in Sussex on 15 November 1924 during her parents visit to the country.
Helene was a daughter of Duke Georg August of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and his wife Grand Duchess Catherine Mikhailovna of Russia. In 1891 Helene became the second wife of Prince Albert of Saxe-Altenburg and stepmother to his two daughters, Olga and Marie. Her own marriage to Albert was childless.

On 13 December 1891 at Remplin, Helene married Prince Albert of Saxe-Altenburg.

Its connection to the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz began in 1851 when the couple’s last surviving daughter the Grand Duchess Ekaterina Mikhailovna married Duke Georg, younger son of Grand Duke Georg. Grand Duchess Ekaterina inherited the Mikhailovsky Palace in 1873 following the death of her mother.
