Duke Adolf Friedrich IV. His Serene Highness Adolf Friedrich IV, Duke of Mecklenburg, Prince of Wenden, Schwerin and Ratzeburg, Count of Schwerin, Lord of the Lands of Rostock and Stargard was born on 5 May 1738 in Mirow. He was the elder son of Duke Carl, Prince of Mirow and his wife Princess Elizabeth Albertine of Saxe-Hildburghausen.
In 1701 the final partition of the Mecklenburg lands took place, and it is from this partition that the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was founded. The founder of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was Duke Adolf Friedrich II who was the posthumous son of the Duke Adolf Friedrich I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
