Duke Frederick of Saxe-Weimar (1 March 1596 in Altenburg – 29 August 1622 in Fleurus, Belgium) was a prince from the Ernestine branch of the House of Wettin and a Colonel in the Thirty Years' War. Another rearrangement of the Ernestine lands took place in 1672 after Duke Frederick William III of Saxe-Altenburg, descendant of Duke John Phillip, had died without heirs and his cousin Duke Johann Ernst II of Saxe-Weimar inherited parts of his duchy
John Frederick is placed under the imperial ban in November 1566, but he refuses to obey the emperor even though he has now effectively been removed as duke of Saxe-Gotha. Elector Augustus of Saxony, the target of Grumbach's attacks, launches his own attack. The people of Gotha fail to rise up in support of John Frederick so the town is taken.
Friedrich Wilhelm I (25 April 1562 in Weimar – 7 July 1602 in Weimar) was a duke of Saxe-Weimar. He was the eldest son of Johann Wilhelm, Duke of Saxe-Weimar and Dorothea Susanne of Simmern.
The death of the heirless Duke William Henry of Saxe-Eisenach means that his territories are combined back into a personal union with Saxe-Weimar (rather than a formal merger). The combined territories are usually known as Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach , with that formal merger being enacted in 1809.
