Georg’s reign came to an end with his death at the age of 81 on 6 September 1860 in Neustrelitz. He was interned in the family vault in the Church of St John in Mirow. His widow Marie survived him by twenty years dying in 1880. Georg’s elder son Friedrich Wilhelm succeeded him as grand duke. Honours.
