  2. Duke Borwin succeeded as head of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz on 26 January 1996 upon the death of his father Duke Georg Alexander. Due to the terms of the 1701 Treaty of Hamburg , with the death of Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Franz of Mecklenburg-Schwerin on 31 July 2001 Duke Borwin became head of the entire House of Mecklenburg.

Although the former Count Georg also had two sisters alive in 1928 instead of retroactively recognising the marriage of their parents as dynastic meaning Count Georg’s sisters would automatically become Duchesses of Mecklenburg and members of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Duke Carl Michael bestowed that status only upon Count Georg, his wife and children.

  6. House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. With the extinction of Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Strelitz is now the only surviving branch of the Grand Ducal house in the male line. The current head of this house is Borwin, Duke of Mecklenburg. His grandfather was Count Georg of Carlow, the morganatic son of Duke George Alexander of Mecklenburg (1859–1909).

His Highness Carl Michael Wilhelm August Alexander, Duke of Mecklenburg, Prince of Wenden, Schwerin and Ratzeburg, Count of Schwerin, Lord of the Lands of Rostock and Stargard, was born on 17 June 1863 at the Oranienbaum Palace near St Petersburg. He was the youngest child of Duke Georg and his wife Duchess Ekaterina.
