Duke Georg died at his home in Sigmaringen in 1963, being succeeded as head of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz by his elder son Duke Georg Alexander (1921-1996). After German reunification Duke Georg Alexander returned to Mecklenburg in 1991 becoming the first Mecklenburg duke to reside in the state since 1945 and took up residence on the Mirow Palace Island.
Duchess Helene of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (16 January 1857 – 28 August 1936), married Prince Albert of Saxe-Altenburg. Duke Georg Alexander of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (6 June 1859 – 5 December 1909), he was Major General, Commander of the Life Guard Dragoon Regiment in the Russian army and a music lover, a skillful cellist and composer.
He also spent time serving in the German Army. Grand Ducal House. Duke Michael has been second in the line of succession to the headship of the Grand Ducal House since the death of his grandfather Duke Georg Alexander in 1996. When his work commitments permit he represents the Grand Ducal House at events within Mecklenburg and elsewhere. Honours.
Georg died on 6 July 1963 in Sigmaringen aged 63. He was interred alongside his first wife in the family vault in Inzigkofen, Sigmaringen. Georg’s elder son Georg Alexander succeeded as head of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. His widow Charlotte survived him by twenty six years dying on 23 July 1989 at the age of 68.

13 de abr. de 2024 · The baptism of His Highness Duke Georg Leopold Borwin took place at the Church of Our Saviour, in The Hague, on Saturday 13 April 2024. The baptism service was conducted by Father Sjaak de Boer, who had co-officiated at the religious wedding of Duke Leopold’s parents, Hereditary Prince Alexander and Hereditary Princess Hande.
