The Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was a territory in Northern Germany, held by the younger line of the House of Mecklenburg residing in Neustrelitz. Like the neighbouring Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin , it was a sovereign member state of the German Confederation and became a federated state of the North German Confederation and finally of the German Empire upon the unification in 1871.
Duke Georg Alexander then acquired as his family home 46 Fontanka, a river embankment mansion in St Petersburg, while the Oranienbaum Palace served as their summer residence. Music. Alongside his army career Duke Georg Alexander pursued his passion for music and supported a number of charitable organisations.
Duke Georg died at his home in Sigmaringen in 1963, being succeeded as head of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz by his elder son Duke Georg Alexander (1921-1996). After German reunification Duke Georg Alexander returned to Mecklenburg in 1991 becoming the first Mecklenburg duke to reside in the state since 1945 and took up residence on the Mirow Palace Island.
Georg Alexander, Duke of Mecklenburg (27 August 1921 – 26 January 1996) he married Archduchess Ilona of Austria on 20 April 1946 and they were divorced on 12 December 1974. They have four children. Duchess Helene of Mecklenburg (15 November 1924 – 8 July 1962) she married Hassan Sayed Kamil (1918–1991).
