Through his father, Alexander was a great-grandchild of Emperor Paul I of Russia. In 1868, he married Princess Eugenia Maximilianovna of Leuchtenberg, a granddaughter of Emperor Nicholas I of Russia. Their son married Emperor Nicholas II's sister, Olga Alexandrovna.
