Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (German: Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg) was a duchy ruled by the Ernestine branch of the House of Wettin in today's Thuringia, Germany. The extinction of the line in 1825 led to a major re-organisation of the Thuringian states.

Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (Gotha, 30 January 1745 – Gotha, 20 April 1804) was the reigning Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg from 1772 to 1804. He was the third but second surviving son of Frederick III, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Luise Dorothea of Saxe-Meiningen.
Frederick I, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1675–1691), jointly with his brothers until 1680: Albert V, became Duke of Saxe-Coburg. Bernhard I, became Duke of Saxe-Meiningen. Heinrich, became Duke of Saxe-Römhild. Christian, became Duke of Saxe-Eisenberg. Ernest, became Duke of Saxe-Hildburghausen. John Ernest IV, became Duke of Saxe-Saalfeld.

Then the duchy is divided for the seven sons of Duke Ernst der Fromme ('the Pious'). It is partitioned between (and into) Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Saxe-Coburg, Saxe-Meiningen, Saxe-Römhild, Saxe-Eisenberg, Saxe-Hildburghausen (1680-1826), and Saxe-Saalfeld. Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (Saxony) AD 1680 - 1826
Emil Leopold August, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1772–1822), was the second son of Ernst II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Princess Charlotte of Saxe-Meiningen. He was a liberal patron of the fine arts and built a collection of fans, which until recently was kept at Schloss Friedenstein.
