7 de may. de 2024 · In April 1544, he ordered Edward's uncle, Edward Seymour, Earl of Hertford, to invade Scotland and "put all to fire and sword, burn Edinburgh town, so razed and defaced when you have sacked and gotten what ye can of it, as there may remain forever a perpetual memory of the vengeance of God lightened upon [them] for their falsehood and disloyalty".

19 de abr. de 2024 · When the men of Hertford were amerced in 1191 for breaking the bridge of Ware they were probably asserting their monopoly of the passage of the Lea. Hertford must have suffered both directly and indirectly in the war of 1215–16, for the castle was besieged and taken more than once, and the district around was the seat of war.
